Painting for Self-Care & Relaxation

Date: Friday, August 20, 2021

Time: 5:30pm – 7:00pm

Location: Virtual event

Cost: $20 for the event; see below for details on suggested painting supplies

Please join us for a virtual self-care painting event led by one of Anchored Hope’s art therapists, Lauren Bark, ATR-BC, LCPAT.

You will receive instruction and guidance as you engage in creative expression, leaving with a colorful landscape painting. Lauren will speak briefly about art therapy and its benefits during the event.

No previous art experience or talent is necessary for this event. Through art making we can connect with ourselves and others, take risks, reduce stress, allow ourselves to play, experience pleasure, learn, grow, and heal.

You can use painting supplies you already have on hand or purchase the kit that Lauren will be using from Amazon, currently selling for $13. The kit comes with 3 8”x10” canvas panels, 12 colors/tubes of acrylic paint, and 6 brushes. Additional suggested supplies include, a cup of water, some paper towels, and a plate or palette for mixing paint.

We look forward to creating with you!

Facilitator:

Lauren Bark is a Maryland Licensed Clinical Professional Art Therapist (LCPAT) with national Board Certification (ATR-BC). She obtained a bachelor’s degree in psychology from University of Maryland, Baltimore County and a master’s degree in art therapy from Drexel University. Lauren is a Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists Approved Art Therapy Supervisor.

For six years, Lauren was the art therapist at a local non-profit agency where she supported individuals impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. She previously worked at an outpatient mental health clinic for children and a residential treatment facility for adolescents and young adults.

Lauren has completed the Level I Certificate Program in Advanced Trauma Treatment through the Ferentz Institute. She participates in the Maryland Human Trafficking Clinician Collaborative through the Maryland Human Trafficking Task Force, Victim Service Subcommittee. This collaborative focuses on the implementation of trauma-informed and collaborative therapeutic services for survivors of human trafficking.

According to the American Art Therapy Association, art therapy engages the mind, body, and spirit in ways that are distinct from talk therapy; “kinesthetic, sensory, perceptual, and symbolic opportunities” can bypass the limitations of language, giving voice to internal experiences.

Lauren maintains an eclectic, person-centered, strengths-based, and trauma-informed approach in her art and talk therapy practice. She helps individuals of all ages engage in creative self-expression and reflection, explore and regulate emotions, change unhelpful thinking patterns, resolve self-destructive behaviors, process trauma, gain insight, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve mood, outlook, and self-acceptance.
